Okey, an ask.

Since we are now transitioning Doctors, and it will be a while before the 11th Doctor graces BBC America, I thought I'd hit my Doctor Who fans with a question.

Like many Americans my age who were even aware of Doctor Who, there was only one Doctor; Tom Baker. Now that there is more on DVD of the Baker years I am interested in getting some DVDs, but the cost per episode is a bit prohibitive.

So, I put it to you, dear readers. If you had to buy one Tom Baker Doctor Who DVD, what would it be? I should note that I have a multi-region DVD player that will display PAL format.

My pick would be Genesis of the Daleks. First appearance of Davros, the origin of the Daleks, and it's got Sarah Jane.

Also good: Robot, The Deadly Assassin, or the very Sherlock Holmesian The Talons of Weng-Chiang.

I'd suggest the Key to Time saga, although the price may be prohibitive.

I know its a bit of a cheat, but there you go.

Talons of Weng-Chiang: Tom's Doctor & Leela; Robert Holmes on writing duty; the partnership of Jago and Litefoot etc

Thanks guys.

I always liked Sarah Jane, of course. I can't seem to remember any of the episodes I used to watch. I remember K-9 being around, is all.

The Talons of Weng-Chiang does sound good...

I've considered the Key to Time. It costs more than the contemporary seasons, but is not ridiculously priced.

Anyone else?

Planet of Evil is a good one, one of the best alien planets done for Who.

I second "The Talons of Weng-Chiang, it's one of my favorites! Actually I already own a copy of it!

My second pick would be "The Deadly Asassin" or "The Lochness Monster".

A third for the "Talons of Weng Chiang", but there are a lot of good Baker ones.

I'd avoid Tom Baker's Dr. Who if I were you.

Sounds like Talons of Weng Chiang is the favorite. No one for Pyramids of Mars?

@Dr. Monkey - you don't like Baker? He was my only Doctor up until Eccleston (sp?). Not offended, just curious. I am a fan of the Timothy Dalton James Bond, so I know tastes vary ;-)

Pyramids and Talons are solid gold Who classics: the high water-mark of the show's Gothic period. But if you want something a bit lighter I'd recommend City Of Death: beautiful Paris locations, Tom at his maddest, a brilliantly witty script by Douglas Adams, and Lalla Ward dressed as a schoolgirl. It's all good!

I think Pyramids Of Mars is the way to go... it is one of the best...

I did read that "Pyramids" was the reader poll "what should go on DVD" #1 pick. I am liking the Fu-Manchu feel of "Talons"... Maybe I'll just go to Amazon and through a dart at my monitor? :-D
