Fan-Boy Icon #4

Sid Haig appeared in Buck Rogers in the 25th Century as Spirot in "Flight of the War Witch" alongside Julie Newmar (part 1, part 2) and as Pratt in "Time of the Hawk" (part 1, part 2). You may recognize him from his roles as the judge in Jackie Brown or Captain Spaulding in House of 1000 Corpses and The Devil's Rejects, but he has a long career behind him, notably with screenwriter/director Jack Hill.

Haig played bad guys Omar in Coffy and Hays in Foxy Brown. Then there were numerous appearances in '70s/'80s classics, Police Story, Charlie's Angels, Jason of Star Command, Electra Woman & Dyna Girl... The list is long.

One of my personal favorite Haig roles was as Ralph in Jack Hill's classic-of-sorts, Spider Baby! This movie is in many ways a precursor to The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, in that it involved a bizarre family living in the sticks who killed intruders to stay together. Lon Chaney Jr. stars as the now orphaned children's ward, and when Social Services comes to collect the children the mayhem commences. This is in a lot of ways a comedy, and not nearly as horrifying as The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and could likely appear unedited on television. Haig's character is mentally challenged in some way, and he does not speak at all, relying only on emotives and body language. It is definitely a film worth checking out for horror fans.

I am going to leave it there. Sid Haig is easily one of my favorite actors. He can turn some awful productions into a lot of fun. I could never do him justice here, so I end...

You might also jump over to Killer Kittens from Beyond the Grave to see a photo of Sid with the lovely and talented Kitty le Claw, here.

I'm a fan of Sid Haig, too. There's a horror convention in Cherry Hill, New Jersey (not too far from where I live), and he's a frequent guest there.

I bet he is a fun guy. His characters are always so all over the place.

The best part of House of 1000 Corpses was the menu with him swearing at you if you stayed on it too long :-)
