Nerd Girl of Note #141: Sharon Needles (#DragRaceSharonNeedles)

So, last series I was pretty hooked on RuPaul's Drag Race, the better of the challenge based fashion/beauty shows. Particularly the second half of the series where most of the dead wood had been cut. The final six or seven queens were the most interesting. Series four was not looking promising, save that the awesome Elvira was going to be a judge. The first handful of contestants were pretty bland, and then Sharon Needles showed up dressed as a witch. This was going to get interesting.

Quick note: if you are new to the blog and need a description of the Nerd Girl of Note feature, please see the index here for a description and previous entrants.

If you are unfamiliar with RuPaul's Drag Race it is on Logo and combines America's Next Top Model, Project Runway and The Gong Show. Needles is thus far the most interesting contestant, and certainly has the best drag humor. She is delightfully self deprecating and tended to scare the other contestants with her mere presence despite coming off as a creepy girl like Wednesday Addams rather than a Lizzie Borden. Her introductory video on Logo's website really won me over, particularly the line "my boy half is smart and sensitive while I am an insensitive dumbass."

Sharon's "boy-half" describing herself.
One of the most interesting things is her drag name. In case you don't get the pun it is a play on "sharing needles" and is incredibly un-PC for a community that is at least superficially very HIV aware. I have seen a few comments on the "series of tubes" that mention how offensive the name is. All the better in my book. I imagine that drag needs a little shaking up. Its popularity and mainstream acceptance will only lead to stagnation. Also, broadening our view of the LGBT community will help expand overall acceptance. We cannot say "drag queens are this" with such ease anymore; something we should try doing with everyone anyway.

So, three cheers for Sharon Needles. Check out the aforementioned introduction video below.

I'm glad you made this post about Ms Sharon Needles. I have a total crush on her/him...I am very attracted to drag queens in a strange gay way. Since I'm a mostly straight girl. Anyways, I hope she wins!!! :)

I hope so as well, and glad you enjoyed the post. I've often wondered at the pan-sexual appeal of drag queens. I seem to remember that Darienne Lake mentioned it might be the caricature nature of their femininity, though I also think some of the best humor comes from drag.

Aside, on the winning part, it might be better to be second? I see a lot more of Manila Luzon these days than Raja. Just like Project Runway, we know Santino Rice and Austin Scarlett, but the winners? Can't remember one except Jay McCarroll.

She actually says "unsensitive dumbass," which isn't a word, which makes her all the funnier.

I had never heard of this person before because I have no interest in the Ru Paul show. Still, I do think that Sharron Needles is a fantastic name!

I think my inner Grammar Nazi made me change the quote or hear it as "insensitive." :-) It is funnier with the bad grammar as it reinforces the "dumbass" aspect of the quote. :-D

Drag Race can be quite fun. "Sharon Needles" is a wonderfully subversive name.

I am a "mostly straight" female as well and find myself to be strangely and incredibly attracted to drag queens...and I definitely have a type...the fishy queens. Manila, Carmen, etc. and also Pandora, although not entirely certain you'd classify her as "fishy"...but just about all of them stir something up. What's up with that, you think?

Anyway, love Sharon and latrice ftw this season!

Manila is really great, and Carmen is ridiculously sexy. I have high hopes for Sharon, but not sure she'll be the winner. Might be a good thing though? Like winning Miss America is almost never a guarantee of future success.

Now, I never got Sharon's name before - I did a Google search, this came up, and I now have my answer!

Sharon, Willam, Chad & Latrice are my favourites - with Willam being a close match for Sharon in the humour department.

"Swiffying the floor with her taint" - on Milan's lip-sync-for-your-life. Oh dear lord.

Hi Tom, Willam is becoming a fav of mine. The swiffify thing killed me. I think my top four and yours are in line. Aside from Kenya, I can't tell you a thing about the others.
